This Week’s Rock Review features February’s Birthstone Amethyst!

Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family. It owes it’s lavender to royal purple hue to the presence of iron that colors a Quartz gemstone through the process of irradiation, when iron replaces some silicon content inside a the Quartz gem. Sometimes this occurs in limited portions or isolated planes of the gemstone, rather than throughout an entire stone, leaving room for variegation in richness and depth of the color hue. Most gem cutters aim to cut the raw stone in a way that shows consistent coloring.

Amethyst is also dichroic, showing red violet from one angle and blue violet from another. It is vitreous, making it well suited for both cut gem and cabochon style jewelry. It registers 7 on Moh’s scale of hardness.

Did you know that in the modern jewelry market, you may see other colors of “amethyst” being advertized in recent years? The most common alternative color is Green Amethyst. However, the savvy jewelry shopper should know that Green Amethyst, or any other color Amethyst is not considered to be a true Amethyst. The green color advertized is actually another Quartz family stone called Prasiolite. When heated, Amethyst turns a dark yellow to brown shade, similar to Citrine. It also loses it’s dichroism. When it’s only partially heated, it becomes artificial Ametrine, which features color fading look from purple to brown, almost like a dip dye in fabrics.

Amethyst is infinitely valuable for many people who turn to gems for aid in healing ailments. It has been cited as particularly useful in ridding headache sufferers of pain by drawing pain away from the head, neck and shoulders, which is wonderful news to those who suffer from Migrane headaches. It also releases tension and reduces bruises and swelling. It encourages a healthy metabolism, cleanses the blood, boosts the immune system and strengthens the endocrine system. Rock Review: Chalcedony

Today’s rock review features the very versatile Chalcedony.

Chalcedony is a Silica mineral composed of an interwoven combination of Quartz and Moganite crystal formations. Chalcedony is somewhat translucent and also has a waxy sheen that becomes vitreous when polished. It can occur in a wide array of colors, although it most often is found in brown gray or black tones. Many semiprecious gems are actually just different varieties of Chalcedony. Some examples are Agate, Aventurine, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Helliotrope, Mtorolite, and Onyx.

Many of the brightly colored Chalcedony available for purchase in the gemstone market is dyed or treated to enhance color, giving us an even greater range of fabulous colors. In UV light, many varieties of Chalcedony appear fluorescent.

Fun Facts

Humans have been making good use of Chalcedony since the Bronze age. In the Mediterranean region many surviving examples of intricate seals depicting rulers and dignitaries are still in great condition. Hot wax does not stick to Chalcedony, which is why it is ideal as this type of tool. Other antique pieces of carved gemstone jewelry and beads are also readily found in the middle and near east from a variety of cultures.

In gem lore, Chalcedony is a believed to be a nurturing stone that promotes goodwill and positive relationships. It absorbs negative energy and brings the mind, body and spirit into harmony. Rock Review: Kyanite

Have the winter blues? Instead of chasing them away, indulge in them a bit with a look at the lovely deep blue Kyanite.

Kyanite is a type of silicate mineral that is very rich in aluminum. It can be found in both sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It’s lovely cobalt blue color is derived from the presence of aluminum. Occasionally, Kyanite can also be orange, if manganese is present during its development. Some Kyanite gems can have a cat’s eye effect that is beautiful to behold.

Kyanite has a special trait called anisotropism, meaning it’s hardness can vary based on the crystal structure present in each formation. It can be as low as a 4.5 on Moh’s scale of hardness and as high as a 7 depending on if it’s planes are parallel or perpendicular to the axis of the gem. A parallel plane is softer, where as a perpendicular plane is harder. This trait is also a key identifying feature of this particular gem. Kyanite also has perfect cleavage in one direction, making it well suited to certain gemstone cuts like baguette, octagon, oval and pear styles.

Kyanite gets its name from the Greek word kyanos for blue. Although Kyanite was discovered in the 19^th century, it has remained a lesser known gem to much of the gem world. Today, most Kyanite hails from India, although it can be found also stateside in North Carolina, Montana and Georgia.

Besides being used in jewelry, Kyanite is also used in many ceramics manufacturing processes. It also can be found in electronics or as an electric insulator.

Kyanite is a useful stone in balancing energy, making it a favorite for those who enjoy the metaphysical properties of gemstones and minerals. It instills a sense of tranquility in its wearers that makes it ideal for those practicing meditation. It’s also believed to assist with enhancing psychic abilities as well as lucid dreaming.

Garnets come in a wide array of varieties and colors based on their chemical compositions. You may have heard of Pyrope, Almandine, Spessartine, Grossular , Hessonite, Tsavorite, Uvarovite or Andradite. These are all species of Garnets! Garnets occur in a rainbow of colors including pink, brown, black, green, blue, purple, orange, red, yellow and even colorless. The most well known color of garnet is the transparent blood red or deep crimson tone that many people are attracted to found most commonly in Almandine Garnet. The rarest color of Garnet is the Blue Garnet which also has the ability to change its color under incandescent light.

Because the chemical makeup of Garnet can vary greatly depending on the variety, it also can score differently on Moh’s scale of hardness. Generally speaking, Garnets register a 6.5-7.5 on the scale.

Garnets have been well loved and used in jewelry and art since the Romans ruled the world. In fact, the name for garnet is derived from the Latin word for pomegranate, due to the deep red color of many of the gems. The Romans and subsequent Barbarian cultures that occupied former Roman lands used the gem in a cloisonné technique inlaid in gold to depict artistic scenes and designs. Today, we use them mostly in either cut gem or druzy style jewelry. It is the state gem of both New York and Connecticut. Some unexpected industrial uses of garnet are as an abrasive for sandpaper and sand blasting, as well as an element in certain types of filtration systems.

Garnets are thought to be a protective gem for those on journeys. Giving Garnet as a gift can be interpreted as a symbol of love and wishes for safe travel and a speedy return home. Trend Watch: Your Out of this World Winter!

The first month of 2012 has already brought a variety of fun new fashion trends headed our way thanks to London Fashion week just around the corner next month.

One trend featured in the January issue of Marie Claire that is funky and perfect for the transition from winter into spring is the something that I like to think of as the Cosmic or Space Age trend. It features clothing and accessories in metallic and iridescent sheens as well as “electric” tones and colors. Think saturated lime greens and cobalt blues. These pieces also often feature sequins, crystals and other elements of sparkle. It’s a modern twist on some of the far out pieces we all remember from the 1980’s.

Some perfect gemstones to pair with this look are Moonstone, Labradorite and Opal. All of them embody the luster that perfectly captures this trend. A large stone on a flashy cocktail ring, pendant or bracelet is a perfect compliment for a glitzy jacket or shimmery dress.

Also, accessories that resemble spacey kind of look are right on point for this theme. Think of selecting jewelry that is studded or glittery in some sort of fashion. Rock Review: Tanzanite

Today’s Rock Review focuses on the lovely and popular Tanzanite.

Tanzanite, dubbed this name because of its country of origin, Tanzania, is a blue to purple tone variation of a mineral called Zoisite. Tanzanite possesses a special trait called trichroism. This means that it can appear to be different colors depending on the angle it is cut or viewed from. It’s planes can either be sapphire blue, purple or burgundy. It’s appearance can also be altered under difference types of lighting. It will appear more blue under fluorescent light and more violet under incandescent light. How fascinating!

In its rough state, it doesn’t appear anything like it looks as a finished jewelry product. It actually is reddish brown in its raw form and requires heating between 550 and 700 degrees Celsius to bring out it’s blue and violet colors.

Tanzanite is a very rare gem that comes from a single source in Tanzania at the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is relatively new to the gemstone world, only being discovered in 1967 as an accidental find by a part time gold prospector, Manuel de Souza, who could not identify the stone. Originally he suspected it to be Olivine. The sample rocks traveled the “grapevine” until they eventually ended up with Hyman Saul, Vice President of Saks Fifth Avenue. He brought them to the Gemological Institute of America where geologist Ian Mc Cloud identified the mystery gem as a new variety of Zoisite. Its proper name is now Blue Zoisite, but most people know the gem under its marketing name, Tanzanite.

In its early days of discovery, some already blue/purple Tanzanite could be found in the earth due to volcanic activity. These days however, it’s unlikely to come across a find like this, which is why most Tanzanite must now be heat treated to reveal its stunning color.

The largest Tanzanite ever discovered weighed in at a staggering 737.81 carats! One of the most famous Tanzanites, “Queen of Kilimanjaro” , was set in a tiara along with 803 garnets and 913 diamonds. It is owned by Michael Scott, first CEO of Apple computers and is on display with the rest of his collection at the Gallery of Gold and Gems at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Ontario.

Malachite is a mineral that results from a chemical combination of copper and carbonate in crystal structures and stalagmite formations. Malachite forms when copper ore weathers in the presence of limestone and other carbonates. It can often be found alongside Azurite, Calcite and Goethite. It has lovely color variance in vibrant rich greens ranging from forest green to tones of kelly green bordering on teal. Malachite can also feature interesting banded patterns which present a variety of unique and beautiful gemstones that are well suited for cabochon style jewelry.

Fun Facts

Malachite has been known to the world and used for about 3000 years. One of the oldest mine sources of the gemstone, dubbed “King Solomon’s Mine” in the Timna valley of Israel, is still in operation today. Mining may have begun at the site as early as the 5^th millennium BC. Some Malachite is smelted, while the highest quality pieces are usually reserved for silver jewelry.

Malachite got it’s name from the Greek form of the word for the Mallow Plant since the color of the stone so closely resembled the color of the leaves from this plant. The name also could come from the Hebrew word for King, since Malachite is considered to be the stone of royalty in many ancient Middle Eastern cultures.

For many centuries, Malachite was also used as pigment for green paints. So, keep in mind next time you visit an Art Museum that you may be viewing Malachite when you look at paintings that were created before the 1800’s. However, it was eventually replaced by other synthetic materials whose colors were less prone to fading due to sun exposure and the presence of acids.

When caring for your Malachite jewelry, be sure never to use chemical cleaners as the stone is very susceptible to damage from chemicals and acids. A mild soap and water rise along with polishing with a soft cloth will do the trick.

Rock Review: Olivine

Olivine is a mineral composed of Magnesium, Iron and Silicon. Many jewelry lovers may actually own Olivine in their collection without even realizing it because Peridot is also a variety of Olivine that occurs when Olivine melts and recrystallizes into a different structure. The gem is distinguished as a Peridot when it is vitreous and translucent. Chrysolite, coming from Greek for “gold stone” is also another name for Olivine.

Olivine is typically green to brownish green although it also can have red or maroon banding. It gets it’s green tones from traces of Nickel or Chromium and it’s red tones from the oxidation of Iron. Olivine, along with Quartz, is one of the most abundant minerals on the earth’s surface and can often be found in igneous rocks and sometimes in metamorphic rocks. Dolomite and other types of sedimentary rocks can be transformed into Olivine when high heat and pressure geologic events occur.

Fun Facts

While many gems hail from locals all around the globe, Olivine has them beat since it’s reach extends beyond planet Earth. It’s also been found on the moon, on Mars and in comets within meteors, rock debris, dust and other samples that scientists have collected.

Olivine can be treated with resins, waxes or oils to enhance its color. When purchasing Olivine jewelry, be sure to ask if your gemstone has been treated and if your jeweler recommends a specific method to care for it. A normal “as necessary “ cleaning routine is safe for Olivine. Just soak the gem for a few minutes in tepid water and mild soap solution, brush with a soft tooth brush if needed, and rinse again with tepid water. Finish by thoroughly drying the gem with a soft cloth. Olivine should not be left in water or left undried since it can be susceptible to water damage.

The holiday season is here, and so are the office parties, family gatherings and formal occasions that call for a little something special to make the celebrations more memorable. When it comes to holiday style, glitter and sparkle are the staples of jewelry and accessories for women and girls of all ages. After all, we ladies do want to reflect the joyous atmosphere that surrounds us; glowing candles, shiny ornaments, and shimmering snowflakes.

One 2011 trend that we love is cut gemstone briolette look. This style features vitreous (glassy) precious and semiprecious cut gems that have been wire threaded and wrapped to create a dangling or cluster look. Rock Review: Pyrite

All that glitters is not gold, which is true in the case of today’s gem the gold doppelganger, Pyrite or Fool’s Gold.

Pyrite is actually a mineral compound of Iron and Sulfide. It can often be found in Quartz veins, coal beds and also as a replacement mineral in fossils. It is present in both sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Although this mineral has been nicknamed Fool’s Gold, it sometimes can be found alongside real Gold or contain Gold traces within it’s crystalline structure when Arsenic is also present.

When Pyrite is exposed to water and oxygen together, it can oxidize and has the tendency to turn a rust color, thanks it’s Iron content. It is opaque with a gold to brass metal luster and registers a 6-6/5 on Moh’s scale of hardness. When your Pyrite jewelry needs a little TLC, it’s best to just stick to mild soap and water, being sure to dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Also, it’s a good idea to store it in its own box or compartment so it doesn’t scratch your other jewelry, since it’s pointy planes are fairly hard.

Pyrite comes from the Greek word “pyr” for fire. This is most likely because pyrite was used for quite some time as a counter part to produce a spark on steel, much like flint and steel. It was even used in early 16^th and 17^th century fire arms to create the spark that would ignite gun powder. It also was a component in early radio receivers that used crystal technology to conduct and receive radio signals. The Greeks and Romans also used Pyrite for jewelry because they believed the presence of the fire was contained inside the stone, making it a source of mysterious power.

Pyrite is a great jewelry choice for those who have a creative bent. It is believed to open both the right and left sides of the brain, releasing imagination and creative talents. It also is thought to promote a connection between the subconscious and conscious mind.

Chrysocolla Formation

Today’s Rock Review features a “hometown” gem for those of us hailing from Pennsylvania, home state of Layne Designs Studio. It’s Chrysocolla!

Geology Buzz

Chysocolla ranges from blue to green in color, often appearing in lovely sea foam or teal tones. Because of its color, it’s sometimes confused for Turquoise, however it is a different gem altogether. It is a secondary ore of Copper. It forms in oxidation zones in veins of Copper ores over long periods of time as oxygen chemically changes the composition of the ores. In these veins it can form either as a crust or a rounded mass. Often, it forms along side or in conglomeration with other minerals such as Quartz, Limonite, Azurite, Malachite, Turquoise and Cuprite. That is why Chysocolla gemstone will often contain veins and traces of these gems as well.

It registers a 2.5-3.5 on Moh’s scale of hardness and therefore should be handled with care. Pure Chysocolla is too soft for the everyday wear and tear that occurs in jewelry, however when it forms in the presence of quartz, it becomes hard enough to fashion into a beautiful cabochon. It can also occur in druzy form, yielding am amazing natural Robin’s egg blue color.

Fun Facts

The name for Chrysocolla comes from the Greek words “Chysos”, meaning gold, and “Kolla” meaning glue. This is because they used the ore to solder gold. A metal smith named Theophrastus is the first person to be credited with using the material in 315 BC.

Not only does Chysocolla come from Pennsylvania, it also can be found in Israel, the republic of Congo, Chile, England, France, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico

As its color alludes, gemstone healers believe Chysocolla to have calming and cooling effects. It can be used to treat nervous disorders and bring a sense of peace. It also is applied in the treatment of fevers, infections, burns or cramps.

December’s Birthstone is the icy Blue Topaz.

Geology Buzz

Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine. It crystallizes in an orthorhombic crystal system, meaning it grows in rectangular prisms with rectangular bases. Pure Topaz is completely colorless. It gains it’s various colors from the presence of other elements that find their way into the mineral. Topaz is most commonly found in igneous rock deposits of Granite or Rhyolite.

Blue Topaz achieves its color when it is heated either by a natural source or by a man made source. Natural Blue Topaz can be quite rare. Three well known shades of Blue Topaz are Sky Blue, Swiss Blue and London Blue. London Blue closely resembles the color of Sapphire.

Fun Facts

Not only is Blue Topaz a December Birthstone, it’s also the state gemstone of Texas. Topaz is also one of the stones mentioned in the Bible in Exodus 28:17 as adorning the breast plate of the high priest of Israel.

Topaz gets its name from the Sanskrit work “tapas” meaning fire. Many ancient civilizations believed that Topaz had cooling properties, including the ability to cool a pot of boiling water. It’s also believed that this gemstone has a number of healing powers including the ability to cure insanity, poor vision, sleep disorders and asthma. Besides its use as a healing gem, today, giving a gift of Blue Topaz is symbolic of love and fidelity. What a perfect gift to give a loved one!

Rock Review: Kunzite

With Thanksgiving just a day away, this week’s rock review will feature the stone of gratitude, Kunzite!

Geology Buzz

Kunzite is a version of the pyroxene mineral called Spodumene. It is made up of Lithium, Aluminum and Silicon compounds. It is usually pink or lavender in color due to the presence of Manganese. This is what makes it different from other types of Spodumene. The tone of Kunzite is often so light that it is frequently heat treated or irradiated to enhance its color.

Kunzite can also fade when exposed to sunlight, so it’s important to keep it stored safely when it’s not in use. It is a 6.5-7 on Moh’s scale of hardness, so it’s suitable for many types of jewelry, including rings and bracelets that may take on a bit more wear and tear during daily use.

A Kunzite stone that appears to be violet, pink or lavender from different angles can be attributed to a skilled gem cutter. When its planes are displayed well, it can take on almost an iridescent sort of look due to a trait called pleochroism.

Fun Facts

Kunzite was discovered in 1902 in San Diego county, California and named for George Kunz, who was the chief jeweler at Tiffany and Company at the time and a well known mineralogist. He was the first person to give a comprehensive description of the gem as its own variety.

Kunzite can be found in Brazil , the U.S.A, Mexico, Canada, Sweden Australia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Today, other varieties of Spodumene are used as a source of lithium for batteries, ceramics, mobile phones and medicines just to name a few.

Kunzite is said to be the stone of gratitude and is thought to bring love, joy and peace to its wearers. It bestows upon it’s wearers a sense of calm and serenity. What a perfect choice for the holiday season as we count our blessings and draw our loved ones near.

Rock Review: Morganite

Rainy November days can have you longing for a bit of cheer, which is why today’s rock review features the lovely Morganite.

Geology Buzz

Morganite comes from the Beryl family of gems. Beryls are beryllium aluminum silicate compounds. Pure Beryls are clear, however, the presence of other elements can change the color of the gemstone. When Manganese combines with Beryl, it produces a lovely subtle pink color that becomes more noticeable in larger gemstones. This makes size an important factor in selecting an Morganite gemstone. If the carat is small or the cut poor, the pink color is more difficult to see. Big and bright stones are the best choices to feature the gems unique traits. Occasionally orange and yellow tones can be found in this variety of Beryl also, often with color banding present.

Morganite registers a 7.5 to 8 on Moh’s scale of hardness. This makes it an ideal choice for any type of jewelry, including rings and bracelets.

Fun Facts

Until 1911 Morganite was simply known as Pink Beryl. It was named for business tycoon J.P. Morgan, who also happened to be a gem collector.

Gem healers use Morganite as a mood booster because it helps a wearer to concentrate on the brighter side of life, even in stressful times. It also radiates calming and relaxing vibes.

One of the largest Morganite stones ever found is called the Rose of Maine, and was found in 1989 at the Bennet Quarry in Buckfield Maine. It measured 9 inches long and 12 inches across, weighing in at just over 50 pounds. Now that’s a whopper!

Rock Review: Tourmaline

This week’s rock review features Tourmaline!

Tourmaline is a semi-precious stone that comes is a wide variety of colors. It consists of aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium and potassium. It is found in metamorphic rocks like granite, Marble and Schist.

Gems with a high iron content can be blue, black or brown. Gems containing large quantities of magnesium are brown and yellow. Gems with a high concentration of lithium can be almost any color. We get the very trendy Watermelon Tourmaline from the lithium based varieties. Some very special Tourmalines are dichroic, meaning they change color depending on the direction which they are viewed.

Tourmaline has a trigonal crystal structure and occurs in long thick and thin out cropping columns that take on a triangle shape. It is a 7-7/5 on Moh’s scale of hardness.

Fun Facts

Tourmaline’s name comes from the word "Thuramali" or "Thoramalli" the word for gemstone in Sri Lanka. Many brightly colored Tourmalines were originally brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company in the fifteenth century in order to interest Europeans in new and different types of gems, which were highly in demand at the time.

Today Tourmaline can be found in Brazil, Africa, Sri Lanka, Malawi, Afghanistan and a few locations in the U.S.A. Pink and green Tourmalines are currently mined in Maine and in California. Rock Review: Citrine

Today’s Rock Review highlights Citrine! The birthstone of November.

Citrine is a member of the quartz family. Its name is derived from it’s lemon yellow color. However, the most valued citrines have an amber or reddish yellow tone to them. It is a very durable gem, scoring a 7 on Mohs scale of hardness. It also has relatively little cleavage, meaning it can take some impact with little likelihood of fracture.

In past decades, Citrine was marketed as “Golden Topaz”. That name has been hard to shake, since it often takes a skilled jeweler to identify the subtle differences between Citrine and Topaz. However, Topaz tends to be harder and heavier then Quartz, with a higher refractive index due to the presence of fluorine aluminum silicate. Topaz, however, has higher cleavage than Citrine and requires some care during the cutting process.

Fun Facts

Citrine historically has been found in Spain, France, Hungary and the Scottish Isle of Arran. More recently, Citrine has been discovered in Brazil, Bolivia, some African countries and parts of the Soviet Union.

The gem is thought to bring happiness, joy and optimism into its owner’s life. Gemstone healers often use the stone to increase self-esteem and open the mind to new thoughts. Tradition refers to Citrine as the “Merchant Stone”. Shop keepers often kept one in their cash boxes to maintain wealth and bring good fortune. Many shop owners still enjoy this practice today. Citrine was also worn to protect a wearer from snake venom.

Ammolite is one of the worlds few biogenic gems, in the ranks with amber, pearls and coral. Biogenic gems are formed from living creatures. Ammolite comes from small shells called Ammonites that are comprised mainly of Aragonite as well as a few other minerals like Calcite, Silica and Pyrite. The result is a gemstone with an iridescent opal-like play of color and a beautiful sheen. Ammolites are a compilation of thin layers of gem which give it it’s iridescence. Colors usually range from green to red, but can also turn up in blues and violets as well depending on the thickness of the stone layer matrix inside the gem. Rare whole Ammonite shells that have fully fossilized into Ammolite can be found occasionally also.

Ammolite scores a 4.5-5.5 on Moh’s scale of hardness and should be shielded from blows or environmental damage such as water or sun exposure. Consistent exposure to sun over time can cause the stone’s colors to fade.

Fun Facts

Ammolite is found exclusively in North America. A few locations are the Rocky Mountains and also in Canada. It is also the official gem of Alberta Canada. It’s a fairly new gem, not on the market until the 1970’s, and was given it’s gemstone status in 1981 by the World Jewelry Confederation. The Blackfeet Native American tribe has known the stone for centuries, however, calling it the Buffalo Stone. Legend has it that it aided Native Peoples in buffalo hunts by drawing the buffalo to them.

Practitioners of Feng Shui tout the stone as useful for improving one’s chi by detoxifying the body and promoting general well being. It’s nicknamed the “Seven Color Prosperity Stone” because each color is thought to benefit it’s wearer in different ways. A stone that contains, deep reds, greens and yellows is most desirable because it enhances growth, wisdom and wealth, all in one.

Rock Review: Mushroom Jasper

When Mushroom Jasper was first discovered, it had some identity confusion. Because it was found near a deposit of Quartzite in Arizona, it was first thought to be a variety of Quartzite. Once it was determined not to be that gemstone, it was then termed a “Jasper”. Although the “Jasper” name has stuck, we now know it to be type of highly silicated Rhyolite (volcanic rock) with unusual circular formations that resemble mushrooms. Mushroom Jaspers are often seen with a brick red background that bears orbital patterns in a range of grays and browns.

Mushroom Jaspers open are found as “thunder eggs” geode like rock balls that are plain looking on the outside, but contain gemstone on the inner layers. These freeform rocks can then be cut and shaped into lovely cabochons, since they are able to take a high polish.

Fun Facts

If you’re an animal lover, Rhyolite is the stone for you. All Rhyolites are thought to strengthen bonds between animals and humans, especially children. It is believed to be particularly effective for use with cats, since it’s often found in environments that are well suited to wild cats.

In prehistoric times, the largest beds of Rhyolite existed in Eastern Pennsylvania, our studio’s own backyard! Today, there is still lots of Rhyolite to be found just under the earth’s surface in Pennsylvania in Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, Chester, Delaware and Lancaster counties.

Dropping temperatures have many women looking forward to breaking their fall favorites, like boots and jackets, out of their closets. Over the past few runway seasons we’ve seen clothing trends feature interesting “hardware” like exposed zipper detailing, large buttons, and shiny buckles. The trend has given every woman a chance to indulge her inner “tough chick”. To complete your entire look, however, you’ll need some flashy accessories to compliment that moto jacket or those knee high boots.

One great jewelry trend we’re seeing that coordinates perfectly with these looks are large interesting chains with edgy pendants. While this type of pendant is certainly able to stand on its own, the trendy way to wear it this season is layered with other coordinating necklaces of varying lengths. Think about wearing at least one or two other chain style necklaces along with a large focal one. Also, don’t be afraid to mix your metals because that is another trend that is continuing to hold strong. All the better for creating easy mix and match looks all season long. Rock Review: Opal

Today’s Rock Review highlights the Opal, October’s birthstone.

Opal gets its name from the Latin word, “Opalus” meaning precious jewel. Opal is a non crystallized version of Silica that formed where ancient boiling hot springs existed in prehistoric times. As the springs dried up, Silica chemically combined with water and became lodged in cracks of the earth’s surface. Opal’s actually still contain some water, up to twenty-one percent. That is why it’s important to carefully guard it from heat and chemicals that can react with the water, causing cracking and loss of iridescence. It is a five to six on Mohs scale of hardness, so it must be shielded from blows as well.

The structure of the Opal is what makes it diffract light and have its unique internal play of iridescence. It consists of Silica spheres that exist in hexagonal or cubic lattices. The conditions under which an Opal forms determines its color. Most Opals are a mottled clear to gray, however, more exotic colors such as red, blue, pink, green, yellow, brown and black have been found as well, black being the rarest.

Fun Facts

Legend has it that the Opal fell from heaven with a bolt of lightning. Ancient cultures valued Opals for their ability to ward off evil and guard eyesight from damage. Nobility often wore them in crowns and as necklaces for security. They were even used medicinally ground up and ingested for healing and to protect from nightmares. Thankfully we don’t use our Opals in this way anymore.

Ninety-seven percent of the world Opals come from Australia, which is why it’s the official gemstone of the country. More recently, common Opals have begun to be valued for use in the jewelry market as well as precious Opal. Some fun common Opal options to consider are the Milk Opal in milky white and the Peruvian Opal in pink and blue. There is less iridescence in common Opals, but still some unique mottled colors that make them quite beautiful. Giving Opals as a gift symbolizes faithfulness and confidence. What a great message for lucky Birthday guys and gals this month!

Sugilite is also known as Royal Luvulite and Royal Azel. It was first discovered in 1944 by a Japanese geologist named Ken-ichi Sugi on Iwagi Island and was named after him. Today, it can still be found in Japan as well as in Canada, India and South Africa.

It is an unusually deep natural pink to purple variety of Silicate mineral. It can be opaque or translucent with a waxy luster. Opaque dark purple is considered to be one of the most desirable and valuable forms of this gem. It is 6-7 on Moh’s scale of hardness. It’s complex chemical makeup, consisting of eight total elements, is a rare find and usually occurs in large masses, when it can be found. The gem contains Potassium, Sodium, Iron, Manganese, Aluminum, Lithium, Silicon and Oxygen that chemically combine to form prismatic crystals.

Sugilite is sometimes nicknamed the purple turquoise. It is also thought to be one of the most powerful love stones, helping wearers to find beauty in difficult times, and forgiveness for those who have wronged them. It also is believed to balance the mind, body and spirit through granting peace of mind and a sense of general well being. Gem healers use Sugilite to aid in the treatment of dyslexia, pain, motor problems and lymph and blood purification.

Gem dealers predict that Sugilite will be growing in popularity in the next few years due to it’s great natural color, it’s durability and it potential to compliment other popular gems like Coral, Turquoise and Malachite. Rock Review: Mustard Jasper

This week’s rock review features Mustard Jasper! The name jasper is derived from old French word “jaspre” for spotted stone.

Mustard Jasper is somewhat uncommon as it is currently mined only in Indonesia from the top of an active volcano, making it a special find! It often is black or gray on the outer layers progressing to a rich mustard yellow on its inner layers. Jasper is formed from Silica and volcanic ash that are deposited and consolidated in the presence of heat and water over time. Patterns are created as sediments are layered and then compressed.

All Jaspers are a form of Chalcedony. Jasper is between a 6.5-7 on Moh’s scale of hardness. It is opaque and able to take a high polish making it a good choice for cabochon style jewelry.

Fun Facts

Jaspers are one of the birthstones listed for the sign star sign Virgo. It is also the Mystical birthstone for those born in the month of October.

Yellow Jaspers are thought to be associated with balancing and strengthening ones social standing. They also are used to give protection during travel and as a shield from negativity.Ancient European cultures used Jasper ceremonially to conjure rain. Legends say that Jasper drives away evil spirits and protects against snake and spider bites. Since Halloween is just around the corner, it might be just the right time to add jasper to your wardrobe!

Art of Making: Seashells

When you are a jewelry artist, it’s easy to sometimes develop a pattern of stone + metal = jewelry. This combination, of course, has exponential creative potential for any number of designs. However, it’s still important, as an artist, to challenge one’s self to think outside the box. One reason that Layne Designs works primarily in these two staple materials of the jewelry trade is to ensure that we are creating durable jewelry that will last for generations. Sometimes we find an interesting new material to use that lives up to our criteria.

On recent trips to the beach, Layne and I discovered some fabulous shells that were just destined for a second life as jewelry objects. I visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina shortly after the hurricane. One of the only nice outcomes of a tropical storm is the abundance of ocean oddities that are readily available on shore soon after. I was astounded by the piles of shells that washed up all week long at low and high tide on Kill Devil Hills Beach. A whole section of the beach was literally covered with broken bits of sea polished shells. I was lucky enough to come away with some great finds. Layne visited Ocean City Maryland. On her trip she found tiny sand dollars, and shell slices.

We’ve been inspired to think about ways to incorporate some of these pieces into Layne Designs Jewelry. A few of our new Saturn Bracelet toppers have seashell accents. Rock Review: Sapphire

All hail the Sapphire, gem of royalty and birthstone to all those born in September!

Sapphire is a part of the Corundum mineral family. When thinking of Sapphire, most people think of the lovely deep cobalt color that is the “classic” color for this gem. However, Sapphires actually occur in many colors including pink, yellow, purple, orange and green. When Corundum is crimson, we call that a Ruby. They are a hearty nine on Moh’s scale of hardness and have a vitreous, or glassy, luster. This makes this gem ideal as a faceted stone. Sapphires that fetch the highest price due to their desirability are deep blue in hue with up to 15% violet blue saturation.

Fun Facts

Many Sapphires have become famous throughout the years. One of these is the 423 carat Logan Sapphire, currently on display at the Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. It is a flawless specimen, hailing from Sri Lanka. Several notable specimens of Star Sapphire, Sapphire that naturally exhibits a reflective star shape known as asterism, are also on display at several museums. The Black Star of Queenland, discovered in Australia in the 1930s, is the largest sapphire known to exist. The Star of India, weighing in at 563 carats, is on display at the American Museum of National History in New York City. It was donated by famous robber baron J.P. Morgan in 1900 and has even survived a jewel theft! Thankfully it was recovered and returned to the museum for everyone to enjoy. The Star of Bombay, originally owned by silent film actress Mary Pickford, is also on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

Long before William and Kate, Sapphires were used as the focal stone in engagement rings of royalty for hundreds of years. The tradition of Sapphires as engagement rings dates back to medieval times when they were worn as a physical symbol of faithfulness, honor and commitment of the betrothed during the engagement period. Considering popping the question? Think about a sapphire instead of a diamond to tell a bride to be that she’s your princess!

Rock Review: Obsidian

Today’s Rock Review features, the classic Obsidian!

Obsidian is a volcanic glass which occurs naturally, making it an igneous rock. Obsidian forms when lava containing the minerals Feldspar and Silica cools too quickly for large crystal formations to crop up. This process leaves Obsidian with its trademark smooth glassy surfaces.

It can be found in lava beds and usually ranges in color from smoky gray to deep jet black. The presence of other minerals, such as Iron or Magnesium can sometimes give the gem a reddish or green cast. A special kind of Obsidian called Snowflake Obsidian can occasionally be found when white crystals inclusions exist, creating a white fractal pattern. When bubbles are trapped in Obsidian, they can leave a golden or iridescent hue in the stone as well producing what gemologist call Rainbow Obsidian. A rare form of weathered Obsidian with a gray opaque band called Apache Tears can also be found on the San Carlos Indian reservation in Arizona. Who knew one gem could have some many different looks!

Fun Facts

People have been making good use of Obsidian since the caveman days, when early cultures used stone fragments for arrow and spear tips and other tools because of its naturally sharp angles when fractured. Greeks and Aztecs also used it as a primitive mirror. Today, we still use Obsidian as a cutting tool on surgical blades since it’s able to cut to a near molecular thinness and has a flat non jagged edge, even under an electron microscope.

Thankfully for those in jewelry business, people somewhere along the way found Obsidian to be ideal for adornment as well as utilitarian purposes. It makes a great beads as well as lovely cabochons. Many wearers enjoy the benefits of its metaphysical properties which include guarding against depression and sharpening insight.

Jewelry lovers who own Obsidian pieces should keep in mind that although the gem is sturdy, it is essentially glass, and therefore needs should be protected from blows that could lead to cracks and scratches and chips. Never clean this gem in an ultrasonic, steam cleaner or chemically based jewelry cleaning solutions. For care and maintenance, a rinse in warm water and polish with a soft cloth will do the trick.

One hot new trend popping up all over the web and retail stores this fall is focal stone cocktail ring. They have also made an appearance this year on the hands of plenty of celebrities like Glee’s Lea Michelle and Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks. Both these actresses and many others showed off their rocks at award ceremonies this year, and now the trend seems to be catching on off the red carpet as well.

What is it?

The focal stone cocktail ring features a large cut stone of usually five or more carats that is often surrounded by a decorative design or tiny accent stones. Some popular gems for this style are both lavender and green Amethyst, Citrine, Topaz, and many colors of Quartz such as lemon, smoky and rose. The Gems are almost always faceted.A few favorite cuts for this style are round and cushion cuts.

How to Wear it:

To wear this trend best, choose a stone that really speaks to you and will compliment your day to day activities. Don’t worry too much about coordinating with your wardrobe. Contrasting your outfit will actually allow your ring to be the superstar of your look. If you must match something, think instead about complimenting your own physical features. Do You Have Problems with Argentium Silver?

About a year ago, I decided to try to convert my silver stock into Argentium silver. Argentium is a patented alloy of silver that includes some germanium for the purpose of reducing the tendency to tarnish. While the alloy is available in wire and sheet metal, it was utterly unavailable in any kind of special shaped wire, like half round for ring shanks, or the strip that I often use for bezels. Findings were limited, but available, and chain was scarce. In dealing with sourcing problems, I found that I could use the argentum for sheet and wire, and get most of a piece made that way, but when it came to using the proper findings and chains, I had to use some traditional sterling.
I did as much research as I could on this new alloy, but even though it has been around for at least 5 years, I could not find a single review of the material from a person using it. There was no information from a first hand account about how malleable it was, if it was easily scratched, or if it took a polish well. The only information available was put out by the manufacturers, and generally referred to different temperatures to be used when casting Argentium silver. In order to offer my customers this tarnish resistant option, I continued to use Argentiumas much as I could in the past year, dispite the fact that it costs more and had to be mixed with traditional silver at times. For all the jewelers out there who are interested in this alloy, I am writing this to help you make decisions about this alloy, as there was nothing available for me.
The biggest problem I have had is that this metal becomes extremely brittle when heated, and breaks under the slightest pressure when hot. For the first time in 10 years, I dropped a red hot piece of metal in my lap because I was holding it in the air to heat the piece from underneath. At a certain temperature, the corner that I was holding from broke right off, and the piece bounced into my lap. The hole in my apron doesn't bother me. What does bother me, are the cracks that I have to repair every time I push down a bezel that didn't quite complete it's seam--the sheet underneath it cracks. I have had to scrap countless jump rings because if they are heated even slightly, the pressure of holding them in tweezers breaks them in half. I gave up on locking tweezers long ago for these...I'm talking about the delicate touch of just holding the ring in tweezers....the ring breaks before annealing temperature! Has anyone else been using a low-tarnish silver?

Carnelian is a rust colored mineral that is often used as a semi-precious gemstone in jewelry and decorative art. It is a type Chalcedony that derives its color from the presence of iron and can range from pale orange to nearly black. It is between a 6-7 on Moh’s scale of hardness, has a vitreous luster and is translucent. Sard is the name of a slightly harder and darker version of Carnelian, however, the names are used interchangeably at times since there is such little variance between the two gems.

Fun Facts

Carnelian can be found often in ancient cultures like the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Syrians, Hebrews and Egyptians. It was a favorite for creating official seals and signet rings. The stone could be carved with relief style symbols, crests and seals that represented a person or government. The gem was either then set into a ring or fixed onto a cylinder and used to press warmed wax leaving a one of a kind mark on letters and documents to make them official. The Phoenicians also used Carnelian to create unique scarabs used in amulets, decoration or ceremony. It is also the gem that was in the first position on the breastplate of the Hebrew High Priest.

Carnelian is said to have a number of metaphysical properties that can be imparted to a wearer including enhanced clarity and perception, sharpened concentration and protection from negative emotions. Finally, enjoy this poem written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about the lovely Carnelian’s history and properties.

Rock Review: Moonstone

Moonstone, today’s featured gem, is so named because it is one of the only gems that looks better in moonlight than sunlight.

This gem’s most memorable quality is a rainbow sheen that it casts in the opaque milky gray background due to reflections that occur within the various layers of Feldspar that comprise the gem. Moonstone is an amazing combination of two types of Feldspar, Orthoclase and Albite. When these two mineral heat and then cool, they settle in alternating layers that cause light to pass through the stone in a range of refractions, producing the lovely rainbow colors it’s known for. This reflective property is called adularescence.

Moonstones are ideal as cabochons and require a great deal of skill to cut correctly so that the depth and axes of a stone can reveal it’s fabulous shimmer, which otherwise would not be apparent to the casual observer. This stone can occur in a variety of tones from grey to brown to clear, but are most highly valued as a transparent gem with a blue hue. It is this classic look that most jewelry and rock lovers bring to mind when they think of the stone. In recent years, more exotic colors have appeared on the market such as orange, green, champagne, red and even black. In all colors, the defining sheen will be present.

Long ago when neighbors were few and far between and communication among friends was not instant, folks would often meditate on a moonstone for answers to life's perplexing questions. Some believed that the glow of color from within was actually an ancient soul inside of the stone. Meditating over the stone, however, is not without tangible merit. The gentle blue glow of the stone actually relaxes the optic nerve when one stares at it for a few minutes. The relaxation of the optic nerve encourages the body into a meditative state.

Many cultures, including the Romans and the Greeks have associated Moonstone with the moon and lunar Gods, believing the rock to be solidified rays from the moon itself. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was a popular choice for jewelry of the Art Nouveau movement. Moonstone was a favorite gem of the famous French master goldsmith, Rene Lalique, who used it in many of his creations. Recently, moonstone has jumped in popularity due to the trendy Twilight movie franchise. The heroine, Bella Swan, is rarely seen without her lovely and sizeable moonstone ring that she wears on her index finger.

The Art of Making: Photography for Beginers

The famous saying, “a picture paints a thousand words” definitely rings true when it comes to handmade jewelry and is a lesson that every jewelry artist learns early on as they progress in their career. A tip for all burgeoning artists is to invest in quality photos as soon as you are able. Good photos convey the value of the product, feature its uniqueness, and serve as a vehicle to connect a larger audience with an artist’s work. They also can be instrumental in gaining acceptance into juried art shows.

If possible, it is best to hire a professional photographer for your show application images, and for creating high resolution images which can be printed in large scale for booth signage. Investing in professional photography is a big step for most artists, and sometimes can be a substantial financial commitment. But, lack of funding doesn’t have to keep artists from getting started cataloging and showing photos of their work. Attractive photos can be taken at home with a simple digital camera and some good natural lighting.

Think first about the look and feel you want your photo to have. Think about the movement of your eye as your view the photograph. Does your eye stay entertained, or does it wonder off? Not all photographs need to have the focal piece front and center. Sometimes an unusual composition will get more attention from potential viewers than a straightforward photo of the featured merchandise. Choose a well lit location to set up your shot, preferably near a window. Natural light tends to work better to photograph small items with a basic digital camera. Select a setting on your camera that focuses on fine details of the focal art work. Take several snap shots to guarantee there will be a good one in the bunch.

If you are fortunate enough to own some studio lighting equipment and more advanced cameras, focus more on taking a clear crisp image on a neutral background that will highlight the quality and craftsmanship of the jewelry.

In all cases, consider the audience for your photos. If selling on Etsy or a similar venue, consider marketing oriented photography. This means focusing on color schemes, interesting accents, and creative set ups that support the look and feel of your business as well feature your product. If your goal is to use your photos for juried shows and grant writing, stick to photos that are clear, uncluttered and show the caliber of your work.

Rock Review: Iolite

Is it violet, golden, gray, colorless? If you are looking at Iolite, the gem featured in today’s rock review, the answer is yes. Confused yet? Depending on the cut of the gem and the direction it’s viewed from, the fabulously unique Iolite can appear to be any one of these three colors due to a special trait called pleochroism, which means that it displays different colors in various directions of the gem structure. Iolite is a 7-7.5 on Moh’s scale or hardness making it a durable gem as well. It also can be easily maintained at home and only requires occasional cleaning with a mild soap solution and a toothbrush.

The distinctive pleochorism feature of the gem gave the ancient Vikings an advantage when it came to navigating the seas. They mined Iolite in Norway and Greenland and used thin slices as the world’s first polarizing filter lens to view the exact position of the sun and safely plot a course to distant lands and back home again. Today, Iolite can be found in India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, the U.S.A. and Brazil. Cutting Iolite in a way that highlights it’s pleochroism in a visually pleasing color scheme is still a rewarding challenge for advanced gem cutters today. All cuts of Iolite speak to the skill of a gem cutter, and can be appreciated by collectors for talent required to produce its beauty. Trend Watch: Fall 2011 Color Palette

Even though the sun is still blazing, it’s time to think of chillier days that are just around the corner, and of course the updated looks we’ll all don in anticipation of autumn winds and frosty windows. Retailers are already showcasing their new autumn looks and treating shoppers to a myriad of modern classics. Those in the fashion world know that THE industry voice when it comes to fashion forward colors is the Pantone Fashion Color Report. So what can fashionistas expect to see on the runway and in display windows for this fall 2011 fashion season?

Pantone, like other fashion reviews, features several colors that I like to think of as falling within the “vineyard” color scheme. You can expect to see deep burgundy, dark purples, calming sage, tones of teal and mustard on a back drop of rich neutrals in the brown family. A perfect match for the wholesome harvest vibe of autumn! For a splash of bright color, some oranges and pinks will make an appearance in sherbet tones, adding an element of fun and surprise to the tone of sophistication that is otherwise prevalent in the season's palette.

A perfect way to freshen up your look for fall is through accessorizing. Most ladies have some lovely brown pieces in shades of chocolate or mocha already in their wardrobe.
